Opting Out

Wi-fi and Bluetooth

Wi-fi lets you connect to wireless networks in your vicinity, so that you can access email accounts/the internet etc. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology that is used for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances. If you have any of the following devices about your person they may have wi-fi and/or Bluetooth functionality.
1. Mobile Phones
2. Tablets
3. Laptops
4. Wearable devices such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, glucose monitoring systems, and ECG monitors.
5. Wi-fi or Bluetooth connected implantable devices (e.g. some pacemakers and cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)).
6. Wireless headphones
7. Wi-fi and/or Bluetooth enabled car keys.
8. Some cars, e-scooters and electric bikes

How can I opt-out of studies?

From the list above you will see that there are lots of devices which have wi-fi and Bluetooth functionality. Turning off a device will not guarantee that wi-fi and Bluetooth signals will not be broadcast. This means your device may still be detected even if you turn them off and some devices (e.g. medical devices) can not or should not be turned off.
To opt out of the study you will either need to turn off wi-fi and Bluetooth functionality on your devices (if possible/feasible) OR visit our stand where the research team will be able to record the signatures of your devices and then remove your data from the study. This will only take a few moments and will need to be done each time you visit the study area.
